With that in mind, I need to purge before going into full no-whine mode.  I spent the last two days as follows&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<li>Add new soundcard\n<\/li>\n<li>No XP driver found\n<\/li>\n<li>Proceed to Windows Update\n<\/li>\n<li>Windows Update adds ten trillion patches\n<\/li>\n<li>Windows Update reboots\n<\/li>\n<li>OS becomes unbootable, hard resetting shortly after selecting the OS\n<\/li>\n<li>One by one, remove all cards and peripherals, no luck&#8230;\n<\/li>\n<li>Attempt to repair Windows XP, find no obvious choices when booting from CD\n<\/li>\n<li>Give up, and attempt to completely reinstall Windows XP\n<\/li>\n<li>Oh THERE is the repair option, after saying I want a clean install!\n<\/li>\n<li>Repair Windows XP (takes about an hour)\n<\/li>\n<li>Re-enter activation code\n<\/li>\n<li>After login, XP requires online activation with a &#8220;Do you want to activate now?&#8221; prompt\n<\/li>\n<li>Select Yes, then the activation app (msoobe.exe) crashes, placing me back at the login prompt\n<\/li>\n<li>Try every login available on the computer, all end with the msoobe.exe crash\n<\/li>\n<li>Re-add all cards, repair Windows XP again, in the hope that having a network card will prevent the crash\n<\/li>\n<li>When repairing, asks for Domain SysAdmin login to &#8220;add me to the domain&#8221; (I am already ON the domain!)\n<\/li>\n<li>Try my domain login, XP hangs\n<\/li>\n<li>Reboot, rerun repair installation, get back to SysAdmin login\n<\/li>\n<li>Find a SysAdmin, he enters the password, XP hangs\n<\/li>\n<li>Reboot, rerun repair installation, bypass domain login\n<\/li>\n<li>Windows XP gets activated and loads successfully\n<\/li>\n<li>Go back to Windows Update (I am a glutton for punishment, and I just HAD to get that sound card working!)\n<\/li>\n<li>Attempted to update all &#8220;critical&#8221; updates\n<\/li>\n<li>Reboot into Windows\n<\/li>\n<li>Attempt to return to Windows Update to update drivers\n<\/li>\n<li>IE crashes, blue screen of death\n<\/li>\n<li>Reboot into Windows\n<\/li>\n<li>Attempt to return to Windows Update, IE is doggin&#8217;, find yet ANOTHER critical update for IE that fixes the bug I just introduced when installing the previous set of critical updates\n<\/li>\n<li>Several more Windows Update sessions later, and I still don&#8217;t have a working sound card driver, and now IE blue-screens every couple of hours&#8230;\n<p>That&#8217;s it!  I&#8217;m purged!
