I must have lucked out and hit a really stable spot in the ever-changing world of open source.<\/p>\n<p>But I don&#8217;t want to get too comfortable.  Much longer and I probably won&#8217;t have a clean upgrade path.  Besides, I think I smell something shiny out there somewhere&#8230;  Seriously, I am looking forward to the latest XBMC changes.  That software absolutely rocks.<\/p>\n<p>Here we go!<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Server first, since it&#8217;s the easiest (no X, no fancy video drivers, no UI apps).<\/p>\n<pre><code>eix-sync\r\nemerge --unmerge iptraf #no longer maintained, use iptraf-ng\r\nemerge -Davu iptraf-ng\r\n# [emerge -Davu world] is complaining about php\r\n# php is now slotted to allow multiple versions\r\n# but we have to specify which one we want to use\r\n# edit \/etc\/make.conf, add [PHP_TARGETS=\"php5-3\"]\r\nemerge -Davu php \r\n# apache is borked\r\neselect php list apache2\r\n  [1]   php5.3\r\neselect php set apache2 1\r\n\/etc\/init.d\/apache2 restart\r\n# keep going with emerge before we dive into further problems\r\nemerge -Davu world<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>The following were broken by the updates, but mostly easily fixed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>mediawiki &#8211; fixed all sites by running update.php on each, whoop; also updated to vector skin, nice!<\/li>\n<li>squirrelmail &#8211; v1.5 install got trashed by v1.4 overwrite, silly portage!  But roundcube now has a sieve plugin, abandon squirrelmail<\/li>\n<li>roundcube &#8211; config files got trashed.  Pulled up old versions in cvs, diffed, fixed, yay for version control!<\/li>\n<li>sitebar &#8211; this PHP code is old but pretty clean.  required two fixes:\n<li>disable call to ob_start(&#8216;ob_gzhandler&#8217;) in [inc\/writers\/sitebar.inc.php] to allow it to load; log in and go to prefs; disable compression; re-enable call<\/li>\n<li>convert useHandler($sbHandler = true) in [inc\/errorhandler.inc.php] to a static function to prevent PHP warning<\/li>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All shiny and new, yay!  Still need to bump kernel tho&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Now for the desktop machine&#8230;<\/p>\n<pre><code># edit \/etc\/make.conf, add [PHP_TARGETS=\"php5-3\"]\r\neselect php set apache2 1\r\n# edit \/etc\/portage\/package.use, add:\r\ndev-libs\/libgpg-error static-libs\r\ndev-libs\/libgcrypt static-libs\r\nvirtual\/mysql embedded -static\r\ndev-db\/mysql embedded\r\nvirtual\/ffmpeg theora<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>I&#8217;ve tried to take the advice to &#8220;avoid static except where really needed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Looks like one package has to go for now&#8230;<\/p>\n<pre><code>!!!
