GPT is a newer Intel-provided partition format replacement for the ancient MBR style, that only allows 4 primary partitions and, most importantly, can’t be used to boot off of drives 3TB or larger (yes you will be using one soon!). So I thought I would prepare for the future and get all set up. What a waste of time…
\nWindows 7 required me to hit Shift-F10 during setup, run diskpart, and set up GPT. Fine, whatever. But then Ubuntu didn’t recognize it. To fix it in Ubuntu, you have to be careful about which tool you use. fdisk isn’t ready, gparted is, but most importantly to me, the Ubuntu installer didn’t recognize the Windows 7 GPT install at all. It’s certainly possible to get GPT working, but after my 4th Windows reinstall, I bailed and fell back on using a standard MBR on my 2TB drives, and I was set up in mere moments.
