Ubuntu 25.10 has gone totally Wayland and removed X, whoa... so i3 is no longer in the GDM list of window managers. To fix, just install lightdm and set it to default during the install:
sudo apt-get install lightdm
Reboot and i3 should be available as a choice again. Gonna need to move to sway some time soon... would be nice to get hardware GPU over proxmox SPICE... that's gonna take some work!
