Somewhere the AVG toolbar got installed on my laptop Windows install, perhaps without my permission when I installed PowerISO. You can remove it in Program Files, but afterwards it had still e.g. clobbered my home page. In case you need manual cleanup:

  • In Firefox, browse to “about:config”
  • Search for keyword.URL and change from AVG crap to:
    http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=navclient&gfns=1&q=
  • Search for browser.search.defaultenginename and right-click and select Default (which should be Google)
  • Search for browser.startup.homepage and change from AVG crap back to whatever you had there before getting hacked by AVG
  • Fire up Regedit.exe and search for and remove the AVG addon at this location:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Mozilla\Firefox\extensions
