We MIGHT have picked up on this if we hadn’t assumed. My election-night-eve streetcorner discussions with my homophobic fundamentalist zealot neighbors, for example – I tried to argue for the “core concepts of the Bible” with them with no luck. I shouldn’t have assumed they were some extremist splinter group – they were the ones that showed they have the power to derail this country.
I’ve been through various stages of grief at the death of my country’s vitality. First sadness, then anger, now frustration. Not sure what’s next. I’ve never felt so emasculated and victimized in my entire life…

UPDATE: This blog is supposed to cover my personal and family life in an upbeat and lighthearted manner, so this will be the last post on the election. I will, however, add new comments under this story, as required, to keep my sanity.
Here’s a rant I never sent, summarizing the neocon madness…

Hey all.
Election time is here. I need to get my final thoughts off my chest, please indulge
me or send me to the junk bin as you see fit. :P Even better, send a response.
There is one area of concern that has risen above all others for me in this
presidential election: Bush’s embracing of neo-conservatism. If you are unfamiliar
with this political ideology, here’s a basic introduction:
http://www.csmonitor.com/specials/neocon/neocon101.html
So folks, it’s basically the notion that we need to be in a perpetual state of
aggression, until the world has been subjugated. They want to install by force our
Judeo-Christian values and “shape a new century favorable to American principles and
interests”. Wow. Think about that for a minute. Afghanistan, Iraq, merely
stepping stones. Just “the beginning”. Now, if you’ve watched the news any in the
past year, you know that there’s a real mess in Iraq. Now, consider that the
current president disagrees with you. He thinks it’s going GREAT! Now, consider
that he’s moving forward in the same direction without a second thought. If
elected, he’ll have four more years of driving the country forward, stretching the
military, endangering the good people that serve this country, on a neo-conservative
agenda to break every other “rogue” country on the planet through the use of force.
That all sounds great to him! It’s going so well already!
PLEASE help me by considering this danger, and letting those that would have us
continue down this preemptive unilateral path of aggression know that we don’t want
it, and we will not stand for it. Because if you let them, they are ready to roll.
And don’t just take my word for it. You can read about it on their own web sites:

Here are some sites that put the frightening “big picture” together. As you dig
deeper, you’ll see that using “tactical nuclear weapons” is a part of their agenda.
This is scary stuff.

about it):

Or do your own research! It’s that important. Bush has “flip-flopped” on this
issue. He pledged that nation building was not the job of the U.S. in his 2000
campaign. And now he calls the neocons at AEI the “brightest minds in the country”.
They are on the move, and only your vote can stop them.
Thanks for listening.
Peace,
Michael
