Coen catchup

Picked up on a few more Coen gems recently:

  • rewatched Burn After Reading
  • The Ballad of Buster Scruggs
  • Gambit (written by, not directed)

Such good fun, from Tom Waits yelling “you measly skunk!” to Cameron Diaz’s ridiculous drawl to Brad Pitt crazy jamming to his Walkman drinking Jamba Juice…

Welcome to Raleigh, Weaver Street Market!

Finally got back on my bike today. I love my bike. It’s the tires. At over 100psi and just the right thinness, with Kevlar to keep the flats away, it’s the fastest way around downtown.

My adventure was only 2 blocks. That’s the distance to anything downtown, in my estimation. To misquote Everett from Oh Brother Where Art Thou?, “what a geographical oddity, 2 blocks from everywhere!” But in this case I’m not too far off.

Weaver Street Market opened in Raleigh today at 10:30am, and I was there to become a member (and get a t-shirt!). Sure I have everything delivered, from Purple Carrot to Papa Spuds to (embarrassingly) Amazon… so it’s a double win as it will get me off my ass and get me better produce.

I’m over 100 days in on this round of GI troubles, which means no meals all summer. My food comes from a bag on my back. Sad. So I’m obsessing about better days head. I read all the local restaurant menus, look into vegan meetups, I read cookbooks… I’m also targeting the oldest farmers market around, 2 blocks away (honestly it is), which has evaded me as it is only open Th-Sat. Wish me luck towards finding a better day! Peace.

Music Stream Scream Cave

Visiting Reiley last weekend was the straw that broke the pay-for-unlimited-streaming-music back.  We have AT&T unlimited data now, thank the good lord, and Google music is free for 3 months with my new phone, then $10/mo.  And the dam has broken.  The stream I just started was White Stripes Beck Cake Dandy Warhols Blur Beasties Weezer Smashing Pumpkins Violent Femmes Pixies back to back.  Easy listening.

On the other side of the coin is all the sweet sweet music of the streets of NYC on soundcloud.  Start with AnimalShow and step through their following list to more goodness.  Don’t miss Dave singing the blues, and Eli’s stuff it’s smart.

9.0 Leon: The Professional

LeonAndMatilda

Where to start… you thought you liked Kick Ass?  Ha, child’s play compared to this… You thought you liked Lucy?  Bah, faggedaboutit… don’t miss this earlier groundbreaker that deals with death and pain and Gary Oldman and mobsters and their quiet moments and Natalie’s first killer performance and… Matilda’s passion for life, like that of many tweens, is inspiring. I was listening to Bjork’s Debut earlier, another amazing example of unbridled passion and obsession, and when Luc included nearly the entirety of “Venus as a Boy” in the movie, I had a moment. :-)

9.0 Jabberwocky

How can there be a Terry Gilliam-directed movie starring Michael Palin that I have never even heard of??!  Good Lord!  Stephen tuned me in and we thoroughly enjoyed this massive indulgent romp through a middle age equally beleaguered by a huge monster and the beginnings of a free market economy.  Classic!

Jabberwocky

9.5 Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy

GuardiansOfTheGalaxy

Those rock solid hugely fun Marvel superhero blockbusters keep coming.  I loved that CA had a serious and important motivational element.  Guardians of the Galaxy was epic too – huge fan of Chris Pratt – Marvel just keeps delivering!  These are just AWESOME fun!

I like that the blockbuster action movies have moved away from the stupid so-fast-you-can’t-tell-what-happened style of action – there are some seriously – SERIOUSLY – beautiful superhuman stunts for which I don’t want to miss a single movement.  Strange to work so hard to write properly (no dangling prepositions) about superhero movies with short curt dialog.  But even that is being so well done these days.  Hollywood is getting their action movies right.  :-)
