Some quick comments on enjoyable indulgences from the media firehose.
9.5 Flight of the Conchords
I feel irresponsible for not pumping this a long time ago. It’s on season 2 now, and worth finding all the old S1 episodes (and old albums and the original BBC radio show and youtube goodies and…) if you have any appetite for beautifully droll humor or oldskool casio keyboard voices. Mine is insatiable.
8.5 Burn After Reading
The Coen brothers keep kicking out the jams. This one was billed as a comedy, but it is painted so dark that you might feel guilty laughing. Ouch.
9.0 William Gibson: Spook Country
I often say Gibson is my favorite author, when I’m not saying Vonnegut is. This one didn’t disappoint. He takes you away to a future-feeling present with tight smart prose, and several interwoven plot lines with his as-always cool-as-ice characters.
9.0 Dandy Warhols: The Last High, Godless
The Dandies are great, and these two songs alone can keep you zenned out. Gotta get their new album soon…
9.5 Pride and Prejudice
Yeah it’s a decade-old 5-hour romance miniseries. Dudes, chill out – crack open a beer, kick back, and enjoy the razor-sharp wit.
9.0 The Darjeeling Limited vs. Drillbit Taylor
Owen, take some time off. We can’t get enough of you, but that’s our problem. We love you, man.
9.5 Death Cab For Cutie – I Will Possess Your Heart
9.0 No Country For Old Men
Bring your expectations of standard Hollywood conventions to this movie and you’ll be left hanging in a big way. I always preach that it’s great to break the rules and veer away from the formulas in movies once in a while (check out this excellent article on “plot immunity” to whet your whistle on the subject), but resolution is not a convention that’s easy to let go. That’s the challenge of this latest Coen brothers’ trip. |

9.0 Incubus – Dig
Chase what’s important to you in life. Play this while you do it. Sometimes optimism is alright! :>
Other times, sarcasm does the trick, ala Cracker’s Teen Angst. Here‘s an interview with Cracker dude David Lowery, where he gives a nod to Kurt Vonnegut for his “irony and humor”, and says “I think Bush has done more for energy conservation than Clinton ever did just by screwing everything up”. I’m currently reading Vonnegut’s Jail Bird, it’s Vonnegut so I don’t have to tell you it’s good.
