8.5 Ain’t Them Bodies Saints

Aint_Them_Bodies_Saints

A sweet slow tender story with genuine “unassuming, introspective acting” (nicked from IMDB’s profile of Keith Carradine, son of acting legend John Carradine, brother of “Kung Fu” Dave and Robert, father of Martha Plimpton) by Carradine, Ben Foster, Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck, who always seems to leave an impression…

9.5 True Detective

true_detective

This completely excellent show plays out with such authenticity that all others pale. Subject matter with the depth of a well-written novel. And incredible acting – either one of McConaughey’s younger or older versions of his character are by themselves Oscar-level material.

9.0 Safe Men

Sam Rockwell, enough said. This movie was ahead of its time in the brilliant slower-than-Hollywood pacing. This is def my kind of thing, quirky characters with lots of room to breathe. Permagrin. :-)

9.0 The Island

The Island

A visually delicious action movie with a surprisingly solid scifi storyline. I didn’t expect much and had to keep picking my jaw off the floor.

NOTE: From here on out I’m trying to keep my reviews simple and spoiler-free. Even rating the movie invites the Heisenberg principle, and I won’t abide further spoilage. In this case, this also affects the screenshot I chose – there were better ones but they violate my ten inch that you enter the movie with a clean slate. Critics suck! You be the judge! :P

9.0 Animal Kingdom

Animal Kingdom

A gritty web of tension from start to finish, half this film is shot in slomo, with gorgeous camera work, and it crackles. How do you survive hopeless situations with your morality intact? Bits of Trainspotting and Guy Ritchie are the icing.
